Surveillance ordinance panel discussion

PDX Privacy and Portland’s Techno-Activism 3rd Mondays co-hosted an online panel discussion about surveillance ordinances on March 15th. Panelists were Renard Bridgewater, with Eye on Surveillance in New Orleans, Kade Crockford of the ACLU Massachusetts, Tracy Rosenberg from both Media Alliance and Oakland Privacy, and Nathan “nash” Sheard from the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Since the City of Portland is currently rethinking surveillance, we brought together a group of experts in such matters. They discussed privacy issues, including the chilling effects of surveillance on the surveilled, the history of surveillance ordinances, the hallmarks of a strong one, and how to build coalitions and engage lawmakers to promote responsible action.

We’re grateful for the panelists’ time and insights, and we appreciate Northwest Academy for hosting the event!
